RIVER RATS ANNOUNCE PLANS FOR 2008
New Bern, NC—The New Bern River Rats will not field a team during the 2008 season, owners Sabrina and Steve Bengel announced today. The organization will continue its membership in the Coastal Plain League and will review its options for the 2009 season. The River Rats, a summer collegiate baseball team playing in the Coastal Plain League, completed their third season in August. The team played its home games at New Bern High School’s Boykin Field. “This decision was a very difficult and disappointing one for us to make,” said Sabrina Bengel. “Unfortunately, at this time it just wasn’t feasible for us to continue without a facility that better met our needs and the expectations of the Coastal Plain League. We want to sincerely thank all of our sponsors, season ticket holders, host families, and fans for their support over the past three years.” “We are very proud of the River Rats’ contributions to the community, including our reading program for more than 7,000 students, the community service of our players for non-profit groups throughout each summer, the annual Hot Stove Banquet that brought baseball legends to New Bern, and safe, family-friendly entertainment at the ballpark,” Bengel said. “So many members of the community stepped forward during our three seasons to help welcome young men from across the country to the New Bern area. Truly, those individuals showed New Bern at its best. Many life long relationships were made by our players and the wonderful people of our community they encountered. We know for some that will go on to play Major League Baseball, they will always remember their summer spent in New Bern.” The team has not made any determination about its future beyond 2008, Bengel said. |

GLOOR NAMED COASTAL PLAIN LEAGUE'S TOP PROSPECT;
GRAVES ALSO HONORED IN TOP 20 Cedar Rapids, IA--River Rats pitcher Chris Gloor was named the Coastal Plain League's top prospect, the Perfect Game Crosschecker organization announced today. New Bern infielder Keon Graves was also named to the list, placing 19th.
Perfect Game Crosschecker is an organization that rates the top summer collegiate prospects from across the country. PG Crosschecker is recognized by ESPN as their top authority on amateur baseball.
Lefthander Gloor, now a junior at Quinnipiac, has pitched two seasons for the River Rats and had a stellar season in 2007. Gloor finished the CPL season as the league leader in opposing batting average (.130), second in ERA (1.30), and third in strikeouts (78) in 48 1/3 innings pitched. He also allowed the CPL's fewest hits (21) and earned runs (7), posted the most strikeouts per inning (1.61), and was twice named as a Rawlings Pitcher of the Week. He was New Bern's lone all-star, pitching two scoreless innings in the CPL All-Star Game in Columbia, South Carolina on July 17.
In his two seasons with the River Rats, Gloor has set team career records for the most strikeouts (138), strikeouts per inning (1.61), batting average against (.148), hits per inning (0.49), and games pitched (34). He has also set single season team records for most strikeouts (top two seasons, 78 and 56), strikeouts per inning (top two seasons, 1.61 and 1.60), batting average against (.130), hits per inning (.43), and games pitched (25).
Gloor's scouting report from Perfect Game Crosschecker:
"An easy selection as the league’s No. 1 prospect, Gloor showed unusually fluid mechanics, command and pitchability for a big lefthander. He had the ability to throw three pitches for strikes, including a 90-92 mph moving fastball that crept to the mid-90s on occasion, an above-average curve and change. He got good downhill plane on his pitches and pounded the strike zone consistently. Gloor dominated CPL hitters, striking out 78 in 48 innings—a nine-inning average of 14.6—while limiting them to a skimpy .130 batting average. He went 3-2 overall and his 1.30 ERA was the second-best in the league. He made huge strides in his development from the spring, when he went 4-2, 4.22 with 68 strikeouts in 60 innings as a sophomore at Quinnipiac. At this point, he projects as a third- or fourth-round pick in next year’s draft."
Infielder Keon Graves, now a junior at Francis Marion, played his first season for the River Rats in 2007, after playing in 2006with the Spartanburg Stingers. Graves led the team in home runs with 5 (second on the single-season list), had a .431 slugging percentage, and contributed 20 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.
The Perfect Game Crosschecker scouting report on Graves notes: "After being drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers out of high school and then playing sparingly in two years at Coastal Carolina from 2005-06,
