NEW BERN, NC—The River Rats today signed pitchers Aubrey Edens of Appalachian State and Bryan Hill of Chowan University, both of whom excelled with state championship teams in Greenville. Edens and his D.H. Conley teammates won the 2005 Class AAAA State Baseball Championship, while Hill and his J.H. Rose teammates won back-to-back AAAA Championships in 2003 and 2004.
“We expect a lot out of both guys,” said River Rats head coach Darin Vaughan. “I expect that they will come in here and really solidify our staff. We don’t know what their roles will be yet, but we are excited to have two eastern North Carolina guys of that caliber. These two guys played in Greenville in great quality programs at Conley and Rose.”
Edens, now a sophomore for the Mountaineers, is a 6-1, right-handed pitcher and a native of Greenville. In 11 games this year, including seven starts, Edens is 1-2 with a 3.83 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 42 innings. At D.H. Conley, Edens was a leader on a team that won the Class AAAA state championship and was named MVP of the Championship Series. At ASU, Edens is a teammate of 2007 River Rat and former New Bern High School standout David Towarnicky.
“I thought he was the best all-around player on that first state championship team that Conley had,” said New Bern High School’s head baseball coach Gary Smith, who faced Edens as a coach of the Bears and as the head coach of the American Legion Post 24 team. “They actually had to win the conference tournament to get into the playoffs. He pitched against us and beat us and pitched against Rose and beat them. At that time he had a lot of confidence in throwing his change-up, which most high school pitchers don’t, and he also knew how to pitch. The best asset he had was that he was a competitor. He wasn’t overpowering in high school but continuously challenged hitters.”
Hill, a junior at Chowan, is a 6-0 left-handed pitcher and also a native of Greenville. In 17 games this year, including 14 starts, Hill is 4-5 with a 5.17 ERA. Last season, Hill was 6-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 11 starts for the Hawks. Hill was a member of the 2003 and 2004 J.H. Rose AAAA State Championship teams and the 2004 American Legion Post 39 State Championship team.
“We’ve gotten a lot of good reports on Brian,” said Vaughan. “We expect him to be a quality left-handed pitcher who can log a lot of innings and continue the success he has had at Chowan.”
